Medical Marijuana, Real-life Success Stories

In his new book, “Medical Marijuana, Real-life Success Stories”, Dr. Thomas O’Brien, ll New York City, hopes to educate people by explaining how medical marijuana can be used to help alleviate the symptoms of many medical conditions and help them find the relief they need.

In 2014, New York State legalized Medical Marijuana and passed the Compassionate Care Act allowing the use of Medical Marijuana to treat a variety of medical conditions including: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Cancer, Epilepsy, (HIV/AIDS), Huntington’s Chorea, Irritable Bowel Disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Neuropathy, and Parkinson’s Disease.  Since its initial passage, New York State has expanded the list of medical conditions that can be treated with medical marijuana to include Chronic Pain, Opioid Addictions and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

“My book gives the reader a look into the journeys that 12 of my patients have travelled while being treated using medical marijuana.  For example, one individual went from being unable to go out on a date due to Irritable Bowel Disease to now being engaged and on the way to the altar.  Another patient was suffering from chronic pain and opioid abuse and is now pain free, and more importantly, narcotic free.

Although leukemia is treatable, after three and a half years of daily chemotherapy, King, a five year old patient had experienced several severe complications. Vincristine toxicity; leaving him unable to walk for months, nerve damage throughout his body (neuropathy), PTSD, brain swelling (leukoencephalopathy), hospital acquired infections, slurring, drooling and mouth sores.  These are just a few of countless others.

King was not responding to the intense chemo regime and as they increased the chemo he got sicker and sicker.  Three years ago, his parents started searching for alternative treatments and found Dr. Thomas O’Brien, one of the first doctors to be certified by the State of New York to prescribe medical marijuana.

His parents were hesitant to use marijuana but after extensive research and with King on the brink of death they decided to try it. Before starting the medical marijuana King looked like a chemo patient fighting for his life, his mother, Shameeza Singh said.

“Even with a higher dose of chemo (75 pills a month) combined with intravenous chemo, medical marijuana gave him his life back, according to his mother. Four medications have been eliminated, including Oxycodone. Marijuana helps reduce his chronic pain and the only pain medication he uses now is Tylenol for fever.  The CBD helps with his appetite and without the Oxycodone he is able to walk and talk with less difficulty.  Further, the THC has helped with his ‘roid rage’ caused by Prednisone,” she notes. The cannabis is extremely effective and King is thriving, his mother says. In a few months, the chemo regime will be complete and the Sing family must wait five years to see if cancer returns.

The two main chemicals used for medicinal purposes are Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD). THC is the chemical in marijuana that has psychoactive properties. However, with a new CBD-dominant strain there is little if any, intoxicating effects and the medicinal qualities of the marijuana plant can be better utilized, Obrien explained.

CBD is the chemical in marijuana that has anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmatic properties.  Additionally, CBD has anti-angiogenesis properties which results in the shrinkage and killing of cancer cells.  THC helps with neuropathic pain relief, fights and kills cancer cells, stimulates appetite and works as a sleep aid.
