Author of “The Calorie Myth”, Jonathan Bailor, personal trainer and health coach joins Mark Alyn for this eye-opening discussion about calories and losing weight. Obesity being caused by eating too many calories is a myth. In his book Jonathan talks about why we need to focus on everything other than calories when trying to lose weight. Lower calorie foods are modified to lower the calories and the natural food source is altered, is terrible for your body. Jonathan talks about how eating the wrong foods can actually affect your brain and cause food cravings which leads to eating more.
When physicians tell patients to “just eat less calories to lose weight” the patient is set up to fail. When people eat foods naturally found in nature they lose weight. The processed foods and foods specifically processed to be low-calorie keep people over weight and make it extremely difficult to lose weight. Jonathan approaches weight loss and the calorie from an engineering stand point.
The focus on calories has taken our focus away from real food and towards non-foods. 40-60% of the average American calories are coming from non-foods. By eating non-foods we have broken our bodies ability to regulate weight. When we focus on calorie quantities we end up eating the wrong things and we break bodies the natural system to regulate weight.
What if everything you were taught about eating, exercise, weight loss, and health was proven wrong? We talk about beating diabetes and what foods to eat. Jonathan discusses the 4 food groups that people need to eat to be healthy and lose weight. Fat in foods is not bad for you and your body actually needs these fats and you can lose weight eating this way. Protein is also key in that it keeps you full longer.
